Crisps packaging machine

Crisps are light, fragile and highly sensitive to air and moisture. Packing them well means weighing accurately, keeping product drops to a minimum and protecting the bag with inert gas (nitrogen) flushing so they reach the shelf crisp.

Packing crisps: the challenges

  • Fragile product: every drop breaks crisps, so a machine with a low drop height or a tilting design is the better choice.
  • Oxidation and moisture: inert gas (nitrogen) flushing protects the oil and keeps the crunch.
  • Large, light bags: bag size and weighing must be finely tuned to avoid product giveaway.
  • Oil and seasoning: seasoning dust builds up, so the design must make cleaning easy.

Frequently asked questions

What packaging machine do I need for crisps?

Typically a reel-fed vertical packaging machine with a multihead weigher. For high outputs, a continuous-motion vertical machine such as the VMC; if the product is very fragile, the tilting VMI reduces breakage.

Can inert gas be added to the bag?

Yes. Inert gas (nitrogen) flushing is an option on our vertical packaging machines and helps preserve crunch and flavour.

Can you pack crisps in doypacks with zip?

Yes, with a reel-fed horizontal packaging machine or a premade pouch machine. It is a common format for premium crisps and sharing bags.
