Which packaging machine should I choose?

Nowadays there are many types of packaging machines. There are 2 groups of automatic packaging machines: vertical and horizontal. In this article we explain the 3 main differences between them:

1. Packaging systems

This would be the main difference and it is precisely what determines the name of the machine. Horizontal packaging is so called because it distributes the film horizontally through the sealing jaws. Once the containers are formed, they are divided by cutting blades and opened by vacuum suction cups to be filled with the desired product.

For its part, vertical packaging It is so called because the direction the film takes in the production of the container is vertical. By means of belts that pull the film to the outside of the guide tube, and the product to be dosed is injected inside. Then a clamp closes the container and at the same time generates the bottom seal of the next container to be dosed. In this case, the blade housed in the sealing jaw separates the containers from each other.

2. By product type

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, the type of product to be packaged will determine the best automatic packaging machine to choose.
Automatic horizontal packaging machines are most suitable for solid products of a single product that can be easily contained and handled such as candy bars, bar soaps, small toys, etc.

While the verticals are recommended to be used for loose, soft, granular or difficult to handle by hand products. Automatic vertical packaging machines work very well for packaging liquids, crisps, sugar, salt, oils, gels, creams, etc.

In case you have several product lines ranging from semi-solid to solid products, you will need both types of automatic packaging machines.

3. According to type of bag or packaging format

The horizontal packaging machine guarantees more leak-tight seals with certain bag formatsThe use of zip or pre-formed bags, which would be more difficult to work with in vertical packaging, is also possible. It is also possible to higher efficiency and better performance for pouch formats.

On the other hand, the automatic vertical packaging machine works with other types of bag formats, such as: pillow bags, flat-bottom bags, or bow bags, among others. In addition, vertical packaging machines can achieve higher production rates, and the types of packaging used are more adaptable and/or easier to handle.
